Opening your home to a stranger can bring up plenty of logistical worries, from figuring out sleeping arrangements to wondering how they will fit into your chaotic meal routine. When club parent Lisa Greenke volunteered to host international UK soccer coaches, she had those exact same hesitations. However, any anxiety melted away within the first 48 hours as the coaches seamlessly blended into the household, breaking the ice over a quick family dinner and instantly bonding with everyone — including the family dog.
Beyond the structured camp hours, having elite mentors living under the same roof completely ignited her children's passion and confidence on the pitch. The coaches provided invaluable one-on-one attention, kicking the ball around in the backyard and even using their personal time to cheer the kids on at their weekend club games. Off the field, the experience turned into a hilarious and eye-opening cultural exchange, filled with lighthearted debates over British slang and the coaches' pure amazement at the massive selection in American grocery stores.
"They're really a part of our family that we just never knew that we were missing until they are a part of it."
For families still on the fence about hosting, Lisa insists the rewards far outweigh any initial hesitation, having forged deep bonds that have lasted over a decade. What started as a brief two-week stay evolved into a lifetime connection filled with holiday cards, social media catch-ups, and return visits years down the road.
