In the modern collegiate and youth sports landscape, building a championship-caliber program requires more than just rigorous tactical training and on-field execution. It demands team synergy, a shared organizational culture, and the kind of deep, organic bonding that only occurs when athletes step outside of their comfort zones. For soccer programs looking to achieve this competitive edge, international travel has become the gold standard of team-building.

For more than 30 years, Travel and Play has mastered the art of organizing elite international sports travel. Specializing in European soccer, ice hockey, and cultural tours, Travel and Play leverages an extensive, deeply rooted network of global partners to curate customized itineraries. Whether designing University/College tours, High School programs, or Olympic Development Program (ODP) excursions, their philosophy centers on balancing world-class athletic competition with rich, unforgettable cultural immersion.

To understand the real-world impact of these tours, one needs to look no further than NCAA Head Coach Mike Regan, who partnered with Travel and Play to orchestrate a massive international excursion to the United Kingdom for a delegation of 60 to 70 players, staff, and family members. Reflecting on the experience, Coach Regan shared insights into how the trip catalyzed his team's development and created memories that his players still cherish years later.

How Travel and Plays Help Build Elite Competition and Player Development

At the collegiate level, stringent NCAA regulations restrict the number of games and training hours allocated to programs during the traditional calendar. An international tour provides a crucial loophole for technical development, allowing teams to gain vital match experience against unique playing styles.

"To play more games than what we're allocated at the NCAA level was a real bonus," Coach Regan noted. "We played four quality games against Premier League academies at some brilliant facilities, and that was really important for what we were working on as a team."

By utilizing Travel and Play's extensive network, Regan’s squad was able to test their skills against world-class academy players. This exposure to elite, fast-paced European football gave the coaching staff a rare opportunity to implement new tactical systems and evaluate player depth in high-stakes environments — lessons that seamlessly translated back into their domestic season.

Unforgettable Cultural Immersion with Travel and Play

While the athletic benefits of an international tour are substantial, the holistic growth of the student-athlete is equally vital. Travel and Play intentionally designs itineraries that double as profound educational experiences. For many young athletes, these trips represent their first time stepping foot outside of their home country.

"For a lot of our players, it was the first time out of the country," said Regan. "Two days in, we went to Selhurst Park to watch Manchester City play against Crystal Palace. Just a great opportunity for our players to see a Premier League game, see the atmosphere under the lights on a Monday night."

Beyond the stadium lights, the team spent several days exploring London, embracing the city's pedestrian culture to visit iconic landmarks like Buckingham Palace and immerse themselves in world-class historic museums. This blend of structured athletic events and free-form exploration allowed the athletes to experience a different way of life, expanding their worldviews while cultivating lifelong memories.

Seamless Logistics and Stress-Free Travel With Travel and Play

Planning an international voyage for nearly 70 individuals — spanning players, coaching staff, and support networks — is an incredibly daunting administrative undertaking. It requires meticulous coordination regarding flights, ground transportation, field space, matching fixtures, meals, and lodging.

For Coach Regan, the primary objective was to ensure he could remain focused on his players rather than logistical fires. He wanted to be heavily involved in the 50-day buildup, but once they touched down in the UK, he needed to shift gears.

"When I did step foot into the UK, I wanted to be there as a tourist, and I wanted to relax, sit back, and let everyone enjoy it, including myself," Regan explained. "And Travel and Play were awesome."

The defining differentiator for Travel and Play is their commitment to boutique, hands-on customer service. Rather than passing clients off to third-party travel agencies or automated systems, coaches work directly with the owners and operators running the business, industry experts like Barry and Ian. This direct line of communication ensures that what is promised during day one of planning is flawlessly executed on day fifty. Every meal, hotel accommodation, and pitch reservation was handled with precision.

The Long-Term Return on Investment: "Money Well Spent"

The true measure of an international tour's success isn't found on the scoreboard at the end of the trip; it is found in the enduring culture of the program. Years after returning from the United Kingdom, Coach Regan notes that the legacy of the tour remains vibrant within his program's community.

"We just recently had an alumni event, and some of the highlights of their time was going over to the UK with Travel and Play," Regan shared. "It’s definitely a trip that sticks out in people’s memories still today. Everything that was planned out was very well executed and, if you like, money well spent."

For coaches and athletic directors considering taking their programs abroad, Travel and Play offers an unparalleled blueprint for success. By removing the administrative burden from coaching staff and replacing it with direct, executive-level customer service, they ensure that teams can focus on what truly matters: competing at the highest level, bonding as an organization, and experiencing the trip of a lifetime.
