Developing Leaders On and Off the Field: A Parent’s Perspective on Tri-City United

Finding a competitive youth sports organization that aligns with a family’s core values can often be a challenge. For Kim Crowley, a parent who has been part of Tri-City United Soccer Club for the past five years, discovering a soccer club that prioritizes character development just as much as athletic success was a game-changer.

Crowley’s family initially found soccer by accident. With no background in the sport, her son’s interest was sparked in first grade after landing a taekwondo "jump roundhouse kick" during a recess soccer game. That moment eventually led the family to Tri-City United after COVID-19 restrictions lifted. What they found was a welcoming community that would shape her son's growth into a confident athlete and young leader.

Here is an inside look at the Tri-City United experience from a parent’s perspective, highlighting the club’s commitment to resilience, community, and top-tier player development.

Finding a Soccer Home Built on Values

When parents look for a youth soccer club, they are often searching for more than just technical training. For the Crowley family, the priority was finding an environment that nurtured the whole person.

"My husband and I have always tried to align our kids' activities with programs that align with our values and that help him grow as a person and not just as an athlete," Crowley explains.

From day one, Tri-City United delivered on that expectation. The coaching staff immediately encouraged her son's curiosity, developed his technical skills, and cultivated a genuine love for the game. But beyond the field, the club’s emphasis on community service and volunteer work throughout the year was an unexpected benefit that perfectly matched the family's values.

"They don't just develop soccer players, they develop young people who learn how to work through resilience, teamwork, leadership, and how to support one another."

A Day-to-Day Environment Rooted in Growth

One of the standout features of Tri-City United is the supportive, growth-oriented culture established by the coaching staff. Developing a competitive soccer player requires a delicate balance of pushing them to their limits while ensuring they feel safe enough to take risks.

Crowley notes that the coaches at Tri-City United excel at balancing high expectations with positive encouragement.

  • Accountability and Relationship Building: Coaches challenge the boys to work hard and hold them accountable, but they also take the time to build individual relationships with each player.

  • Freedom to Make Mistakes: "Our son has become a more confident player because he's been given the opportunity to make mistakes, learn from them, and keep improving," says Crowley.

  • Clear Parent Communication: The club maintains excellent communication regarding schedules and expectations, allowing parents to simply focus on supporting their children and enjoying the experience.

Navigating High-Stakes Moments: The NPL National Championships

While the day-to-day environment focuses on holistic development, Tri-City United also prepares its athletes to compete at the highest levels. For Crowley, the defining moment of their five-year journey was watching her son’s team win the NPL National Championships this past summer.

The tournament was a grueling test of endurance and willpower. Playing in 100-degree heat every day, the boys faced immense adversity and had to dig deep to pull out a victory. But for the parents on the sidelines, the trophy was only part of the reward.

"Winning the championship was unforgettable, but what I'll remember the most is what it represented: a group of boys who trusted each other, families who supported one another, and a club that helped create an environment where everybody felt like they were a part of something bigger than themselves."

Crowley describes the sideline atmosphere as incredibly emotional, with parents rallying behind every single boy on the team — celebrating every goal, tackle, and save as one unified soccer family.

Elevating the Game: Technical Camps and International Perspectives

Tri-City United’s dedication to continually raising the level of its program is evident in its supplemental training opportunities. Crowley's son has actively participated in both the summer and winter technical skills camps, which provide crucial extra touches on the ball while keeping the environment fun and engaging.

The club also goes above and beyond to bring diverse coaching philosophies to its players.

This past spring, Tri-City United brought in a coach from England. The Crowley family had the unique privilege of hosting him, giving them a firsthand look at the club’s ambitious vision.

"Spending time with him gave us a unique perspective on the club's vision and its commitment to bringing different ideas, experiences, and coaching philosophies to the players," Crowley notes. "It reinforced how dedicated Tri-City United is to providing opportunities that many communities simply don't have."

Why Families Recommend Tri-City United

When asked if she would recommend Tri-City United to another soccer family, Crowley doesn't hesitate. For her, it all comes back to the people.

Through Tri-City United, her son has formed incredible bonds with his teammates, gaining immense confidence with the ball at his feet and trusting the hard work he puts in. Meanwhile, the parents have built lasting friendships within a community that celebrates each player’s success as if it were their own.

"If you're looking for a club that develops great athletes, while also building confident, respectful, and resilient young people, I would absolutely recommend Tri-City United," Crowley says. "We're grateful for everything it has given our son and our family over the past 5 years."
