Even after securing her college soccer commitment, senior athlete Maddison Balashaitis made the deliberate choice to switch to Sporting Iowa for her final year of high school. Driven by a desire to reach her absolute peak potential before transitioning to the collegiate stage, the Ankeny native joined the U19 ECNL roster to immerse herself in a hyper-competitive ecosystem. What she discovered was an empowering environment where every player, coach, and staff member was completely bought into the daily process of growth. Maddison found herself surrounded by like-minded athletes who held exceptionally high standards for themselves, creating an inspiring collective culture focused entirely on mutual improvement, accountability, and falling in love with the daily grind.

That commitment to excellence pushed Maddison to new heights both technically and mentally. Testing her skills against premier Midwest ECNL competition — including national team prospects and future elite college standouts — proved she could comfortably handle the physical and demanding nature of next-level play. A defining milestone in her development occurred when a coach pulled her off the field for a lack of communication; though a tough pill to swallow in the moment, it permanently transformed her game and instilled the precise verbal leadership required of a college athlete. Off the pitch, the club further prioritized holistic player growth through an unexpected team "book club" and leadership journal routine, which taught her the lasting value of mastering the "little things" while navigating the time-management demands of a nightly 30-minute commute.

"I just loved being there. Amazing teammates, amazing coaches, amazing staff. There's a great support staff, and it's just nice to be in an environment where everyone has the same goal, just to get better, grow and improve."

Beyond the rigorous training, Maddison treasures the vibrant team camaraderie built during out-of-state ECNL showcases, where traveling to new cities and rallying on the sidelines to cheer a teammate on in a national selection game forged unforgettable memories. Now experiencing life as a successful college athlete, she emphasizes that her Sporting Iowa coaches still regularly reach out to check on her progress, highlighting a deep, genuine care that extends far past graduation. Her ultimate advice to incoming players is to release the pressure of comparing timelines, trust the process through both high and low days, and fully embrace the journey.
