For many youth athletes, a local sports club becomes a second home — a place where they not only learn the fundamentals of a game but also discover who they are as leaders and teammates. For Louis Dawson, Tri-City United Soccer Club has been that home since kindergarten.
Progressing from the recreational leagues to the highest levels of competitive play, Dawson’s journey is a testament to the club's developmental philosophy. Now a standout striker, he shares an inside look at how Tri-City United’s patient coaching, elite competitive opportunities, and supportive community have shaped him into the player and person he is today.
Finding the Right Fit and Climbing the Ranks
Dawson’s path to the top team wasn't an overnight success; it required hard work and an environment that fostered growth. When he transitioned to competitive soccer in middle school, he initially found himself on the club's secondary squad.
"At first we had two teams... and at first I was on the white team, which was the bottom team," Dawson recalls. "But I feel like I was always challenged to keep coming to practice and keep getting better, keep finding out just how to be the best player I can be. And now I'm on the black team, the better team."
Part of that growth involved discovering his true identity on the pitch. Dawson didn't have a set position when he started playing competitively. He tried everything from goalkeeper and center back to the midfield. Ultimately, he settled in as a striker because the "coaches were patient with me and just wanted to see what position I was the best in." Today, he is constantly pushed to improve his technical ability, analyze space, and finish his runs.
Embracing High-Level Competition and the President’s Cup
A major highlight of playing for Tri-City United is the opportunity to compete on massive regional stages. For Dawson, nothing beats the thrill of the President’s Cup, a prestigious tournament where Tri-City United frequently represents the state of North Dakota.
"If you make the final, then you get your spot at national, so you go represent North Dakota, but also your club," Dawson explains. "The competition is always pretty good, and we're always really close... it's just a lot of fun."
What truly sets the club's culture apart, however, is how the players handle the results. While winning is the goal, Dawson has learned to embrace the struggle. "For me, it's more exciting to lose because then there's a motivation," he says. "There's something that you really want to go after and go get, which is just becoming better, so you can win next time."
Developing Leadership and Life Skills Off the Pitch
The impact of Tri-City United extends far beyond technical drills and tournament trophies. The club places a heavy emphasis on personal development, equipping athletes with skills that translate directly into their everyday lives.
"Leadership is a skill that Tri-Cities helped me fully develop in my life off the field and on the field," Dawson notes. "Just how to be a good teammate, a good friend, a good person to other people and give them constructive feedback versus making them feel bad about a mistake, which doesn't really help them grow."
This supportive approach is mirrored by the coaching staff. Dawson highlights how his coaches care for all the players on a personal level, actively supporting them in off-the-field endeavors. This creates a tight-knit community where teammates hang out together, play against each other in school sports, and maintain strong friendships year-round.
A Highly Recommended Environment for Growth
When asked what he would tell a family considering joining Tri-City United, Dawson doesn’t hesitate. He points to the welcoming atmosphere for parents and the incredible developmental ceiling for players.
"I would 100% recommend any family to join Tri-City... because it is truly wonderful," Dawson says. "It's a good environment, there's a ton of opportunity for growth as a player. We play great teams, we play teams that may be out of our league, but that just really teaches us going forward how we can take our game to the next step."
For Dawson, the club has provided the ultimate foundation: "I just experienced great things at Tri-City as a player and just as a human being."
