Finding the right youth soccer camp can be a daunting task for families. It’s not just about keeping kids busy during the summer; it’s about finding a program that helps improve their technical skills while they have fun.

For Peter Munkittrick, a Camps, Clinics, and Pre-Academy Coach for Minnesota United FC (MNUFC), achieving that perfect balance isn't an accident — it's the foundation of the club's curriculum. By integrating official, professional-level game principles into an engaging, high-energy environment, Munkittrick explains how MNUFC camps are uniquely positioned to serve everyone from first-time players to future academy stars, building better athletes and passionate, lifelong fans in the process.

What are the main development goals at Minnesota United FC soccer camps?

For youth athletes, the best learning happens in an environment where they feel encouraged and supported. Minnesota United FC formats its camps to achieve three distinct objectives: having fun, improving as a player, and building lasting friendships.

"We want every kid going home at the end of the day with a smile on their face," explains Coach Munkittrick. "We want them to learn something that maybe they didn't know before or just to make them a better soccer player. And then third is they make new friends."

The MNUFC coaching staff uses soccer as a tool to develop character. By creating a safe, engaging space, knowledgeable coaches encourage kids to step out of their shells, try new things, and even fail — all within an environment where mistakes are viewed as a critical part of the learning process.

How MNUFC youth camps build community and a love for the Loons

Beyond technical development, MNUFC camps aim to instill a lifelong love for the game and the local club. For Munkittrick, one of the most rewarding aspects of coaching is seeing camp attendees transition into passionate supporters in the stands at Allianz Field.

He recalls speaking with a camper who had never watched a Minnesota United game. After casually discussing the club and its players, Munkittrick didn't think much of it — until he heard his name called out at a later MNUFC match. "I feel like my words kind of got through to him and made him want to go to a game," Munkittrick shares. "It was just really great seeing him actually at the game, had a great time... We want all kids that come to the camp, we want them to fall in love with the club. We want them to want to keep coming back because we think that's just a great experience for them, and it's super important for kids to want to just have something to support."

Inside the MNUFC daily schedule: Tactical training and theme days

To keep the camp environment fresh and exciting, the MNUFC staff structures the weekly schedule around both tactical lessons and fun cultural events. Each day focuses on a specific on-field topic — such as attacking, defending, or moments in possession. But the fun doesn't stop when the drills end.

"There's also a theme of the day," says Munkittrick. "We have an International Jersey Day where kids can come wearing a Spain jersey or Italy... and it's just really fun to see the kids and let them show off the jerseys that they have. We also have a Loons Day where kids can come and wear every single piece of Loon's gear that they have, and then again, we all vote on who is best dressed."

Using MNUFC camps as a pathway to Pre-Academy and MLS NEXT scouting

Whether a player is taking their first steps in soccer or serves as the top talent on their local club team, MNUFC camps offer immense value. Attendees are taught the exact game principles utilized by the professional club, giving them a unique edge when they return to their home teams.

Furthermore, these camps serve as a vital scouting ground for elite talent. Because Munkittrick and other staff members are directly connected to the MNUFC Pre-Academy and Academy ranks, standout players are frequently identified for higher-level opportunities.

"A lot of players that I coached there [in the Pre-Academy], we've seen from our camps," Munkittrick notes. "If you want to play at a higher level, compete with players that are on other teams... when they hit that age, they can try out for the U-15s team, they've already been seen by all of our academy coaches. So if you're looking to play at that next level, I think our camps are a great start to just have people see you."
